Read the story on pages 18–20. Who are the main characters? What are the titles? Then tick the title.

The main characters are Musa and Hakan.

The titles are The trick and The accident.

Ответ: ✓ The trick.

Read the story on pages 18–20 again. Answer the questions.

  1. Why was Pinar angry with Hakan? Pinar was angry because Hakan wanted to sell her a sick horse without telling her that it was sick.

  2. Why did Hakan think he was doing ‘a good thing’ for Musa? He thought he was doing a good thing because he was selling Musa his strongest and fastest horse at a very good price.

  3. How did Musa know that the horse wasn’t sick? Musa looked at the horse’s teeth and saw that it wasn’t sick.

  4. What accident did Musa say he had? He said that he had broken his leg.

  5. Why did Musa want to take Hakan to a doctor? Musa wanted to show Hakan how to treat a friend properly and teach him a lesson.

  6. What did Hakan decide to tell Musa in the end? He decided to tell Musa the truth: Musa’s horse wasn’t strong and fast enough to take him to the hospital, so they should use Hakan’s strongest and fastest horse.

Tick (✓) the morals in the story.

✓ 1. You should be kind to your friends or you will lose them. ✓ 2. You must never try to trick your friends. ✓ 4. You should be kind and helpful to be a good friend. ✓ 5. Sometimes it’s OK to trick someone to show them that they’re wrong. ✓ 6. It’s important to say sorry when you hurt a friend.

Discuss the questions. Give reasons for your answers.

  1. What two tricks happen in the story? First, Hakan tricks Musa into buying a horse that isn’t strong or fast. Then Musa tricks Hakan by pretending that he has broken his leg and needs to get to hospital.

  2. Do you think both tricks were wrong? I don’t think both tricks were equally wrong. Hakan tricked Musa to get money, whereas Musa’s trick helped Hakan understand his mistake.

  3. What did you think of Hakan at the beginning of the story? And at the end? At the beginning, I thought Hakan was dishonest and selfish. At the end, I thought he was becoming a better friend because he told the truth and apologised.

  4. Did your opinion of him change? Yes, it did. He understood that friendship was more important than money.

  5. Did your opinion of Musa change during the story? Yes, it did. At first, I thought he trusted Hakan too easily. Later, I realised that he was clever and knew how to teach his friend a lesson.

  6. Who do you think was a better friend – Hakan or Musa? I think Musa was a better friend because he wanted to help Hakan become honest rather than simply stop being his friend.

Imagine that Musa really broke his leg and Hakan didn’t tell him the truth. How would the ending be different? Discuss.

If Musa really broke his leg and Hakan didn’t tell him the truth, the slow horse might not get him to hospital in time. Musa would suffer and might stop trusting Hakan. Their friendship could end because Hakan cared more about hiding his lie than helping his friend.

Find words which express the writer’s opinion at different points in the story. Is it similar to your ideas in Activity 4? Which ending do you prefer? Why?

The writer says, “That year there was one problem. Money was very important to Hakan and, unfortunately, it was sometimes more important than friends!” This shows that the writer disapproves of Hakan’s selfishness.

Later, the writer says, “Hakan knew that this was an emergency and that Atik couldn’t carry his friend for three hours. It was time to tell Musa the truth.” This shows that Hakan needs to be honest and put his friend first.

These opinions are similar to mine: Hakan behaves badly at first, but telling the truth is the right thing to do.

I prefer the original ending because nobody is seriously hurt, Hakan learns a lesson, and the two men remain friends.
